NJ Civil Service Navigator

Data Sources

Data sources used by NJ Civil Service Navigator: 8 public datasets holding 421,780 records — CSC job specifications, YourMoney payroll, pension membership, and the FY 2027 Compensation Compendium.

This site is built from 8 public datasets holding 421,780 records between them. Every one is published by New Jersey; none of it is collected from users, and none of it is estimated or modelled. Each row below names what the dataset covers, how much of it there is, and the date the data itself is about, which is not the same as the date we last fetched it.

DatasetWhat it coversSizeData is from
Job specificationsNew Jersey Civil Service Commission Every published title code, State and local5,689 carry a published specification; 1,051 are title codes CSC lists with no specification document. 6,740 title records July 27, 2026
Salary schedulesNew Jersey Civil Service Commission FY 2027 Compensation Compendium, effective 2026-07-11Reconciled against CSC's own schedule lookup, which also carries 43 fiscal years back to 1985. 36 published schedules July 11, 2026
State agency payrollNJ Transparency Center (YourMoney) 39 State departments and agenciesActual pay, which is not the same as the salary range published for a title. 73,092 employees 2026-Q1
Independent authority payrollNJ Transparency Center (YourMoney) 16 authoritiesA separate system from the State payroll. The two are never merged. 19,416 employees December 31, 2025
Pension membershipNJ Division of Pensions and Benefits 279 local employers and 16 authoritiesPensionable salary over the four most recent quarters, not an annual rate and not take-home pay. Members, not headcount. 321,592 enrolled members March 31, 2026
Local civil service jurisdictionsNew Jersey Civil Service Commission Workforce Profile 21 countiesThe published listing is complete, so a New Jersey municipality absent from it is not a civil service jurisdiction rather than merely unknown. 428 jurisdictions July 1, 2024
N.J.A.C. Title 4ANJ Office of Administrative Law 10 chapters, 41 subchaptersCurrent through New Jersey Register, Vol. 58 No. 14, July 20, 2026. 296 rule sections July 26, 2026
N.J.S.A. Title 11ANJ Legislature 12 chaptersCurrent through New Jersey 221st Second Annual Session, L. 2025, c. 346 and J.R. 22. A statute changes only when the Legislature amends it, so a section untouched since then is settled rather than stale. 180 statute sections July 28, 2026

Two dates matter and they are different. Data is from is the period the records describe. The date we last fetched a dataset is recorded with the dataset itself, and for job specifications it is shown on every page that uses one. A statute or a rule carries a third kind of date again: an enactment watermark rather than a snapshot, so a section untouched since then is settled rather than stale.

1. NJ Civil Service Commission

Job specifications are sourced from the official NJ Civil Service Commission Title List. Each specification includes the official job title, 5-digit code, definition, examples of work, education and experience requirements, knowledge and abilities, and licensing requirements. Data is collected monthly via automated web scraping.

2. NJ YourMoney Agency Payroll

State agency payroll data comes from NJ YourMoney, updated quarterly by the NJ Office of Management and Budget. This dataset covers employees paid through the central state payroll system.

3. NJ Authority Payroll

Independent authority payroll data (NJ Transit, Turnpike, EDA, etc.) is sourced from the YourMoney Authority Payroll dataset, representing annual snapshots as of December 31 of each year.

4. FY 2027 Compensation Compendium

Salary schedule data is extracted from the annual NJ Compensation Compendium published by the Civil Service Commission, covering ERG salary ranges and step progressions.
