NJ Civil Service Navigator

Data Transparency

How NJ Civil Service Navigator collects, processes, and presents data. Methodology, limitations, data quality flags, and update frequency.

Data Collection Methodology

Job specifications are collected monthly via automated web scraping of the NJ Civil Service Commission's Title List. The scraper collects the full HTML of each job spec page and parses it into structured fields. All changes are tracked in a changelog with field-level diffs.

Data Quality Flags

  • salaryInferred — Salary range was estimated from job title patterns, not extracted from source data
  • synthetic — Specification was generated from pattern matching rather than scraped from an actual page
  • Generic Title Warning — Shown for titles like "Government Representative" where salary comparisons may be misleading due to wide variation in actual duties

Limitations

This is an independent resource and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the NJ Civil Service Commission. Payroll title matching to civil service specs achieves approximately 78% coverage. Authority payroll data may use different job classification systems than the civil service. Always verify critical information with official sources.
