MEDICAL EXAMINER DISABILITY DETERMINATIONS\n\nUNCLASSIFIED \nN.J.S.A. 11:4-49\n\nDEFINITION\n\nUnder the administrative direction of a Supervising Medical Examiner or other\n supervisor in the Division of Disability Determinations, Department of Labor, offers\n technical assistance to lay professional staff and participates as a member of a \nreview team in a program of medical determinations rendered by the Division; does \nrelated work as required.\n\nNOTE: The examples of work for this title are for illustrative purposes \nonly. A particular position using this title may not perform all duties listed in this \njob specification. Conversely, all duties performed on the job may not be listed.\n\nEXAMPLES OF WORK:\n\nReviews and evaluates recommendations of lay professional staff regarding \ndisposition of Social Security and Supplemental Security Income claims for disability\nbenefits including initial requests, continuing disability insurance, and reconsideration\nclaims.\n\nInterprets the laws, rules, and policies relating to medical aspects of disability \ndeterminations under the Social Security Law to lay professional staff.\n\nReviews staff evaluation of available medical evidence and recommends purchase of \nsuch consultative examinations; and may, as a member of the review team, concur or \nobject to the purchase of same.\n\nPeriodically addresses groups regarding the programs of Division of Disability \nDeterminations.\n\nPrepares complex medical opinions in for use by the medical Directors.\n\nMay be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording\nand information systems used by the agency, office or related units.\n\nREQUIREMENTS:\n\nEDUCATION:\n\nGraduation from an accredited medical School.\n\nLICENSE:\n\nLicense to practice medicine in the State of New Jersey.\n\nAppointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only \nif the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform \nessential duties of the position.\n\nKNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:\n\nAbility to make disability determinations in accordance with the provisions of Titles II \nand XVI of the Federal Social Security Act.\n\nAbility to develop and maintain effective working relationships with representatives of \npublic and private organizations.\n\nAbility to work effectively with supervisors, subordinates, co-workers and interested \nmembers of the public.\n\nAbility to present an effective in-service training program to lay professional staff.\n\nAbility to prepare complex medical opinions.\n\nAbility to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and \ninformation systems used by the agency, office or related units.\n\nAbility to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to \nperform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be \nconsidered as acceptable forms of communication.\n\nPerson with mental or physical disabilities are eligible as long as they can perform \nthe essential functions of the job after reasonable accommodation is made to their \nknow limitations.
