Definition
Under direction, performs work relating to the medical-social problems of recipients of public assistance; assists in obtaining and correlating medical and social histories of recipients; performs routine and difficult office and field work involved in providing needed medical and social assistance for recipients of public assistance; may supervise Social Workers engaged in providing needed medical and social assistance to recipients of public assistance; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
May supervise the activities of assigned Social Workers engaged in receiving and acting upon applications for medical assistance. May be responsible for the determination and supervision of assistance rendered by assigned social workers. May review case histories of Social Workers for accuracy and completeness. Evaluates recommendations of assigned Social Workers for accuracy and completion. Prepares correspondence and suitable reports. Answers inquiries. May guide, instruct, and assign tasks and be responsible for the work of the assigned employees. May assume responsibility for the development and training of Social Work staff through individual and group training programs. Organizes assigned tasks concerned with the medical problems of persons receiving public assistance and develops effective work methods. Assists the Medical Consultant in analyzing and evaluating social data bearing on medical problems. Assists other members of the agency staff in analyzing and evaluating medical data relating to social problems. Assists clients and their families in securing services of a medical nature. Consults with other agencies in connection with medical-social problems affecting recipients of public assistance. Prepares case history reports and special and statistical reports- covering medical-social serviced as may be required. Maintains essential records and files. Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
License
Current and valid registration as a professional nurse in the State of New Jersey or completion of one year of specialized training in medical social work from an approved school of social work. Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Considerable knowledge of the purposes, policies, standards, and procedures involved in doing social work pertaining to the medical needs and care of recipients of public assistance. Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. Ability to analyze laws, rules, regulations, and procedures and apply them with reasonable consistency to individual cases. Ability to draw sound medical-social work conclusions and basing appropriate action thereon. Ability to organize assigned medical social work and develop effective work methods. Ability to prepare, clear, sound, accurate, and informative reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations. Good health and freedom from disabling physical and mental defects which would impair the proper performance of the required duties, or which might endanger the health and safety of oneself or others. Ability to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication. Note
Applicants must meet one of the following or a combination of both experience and education. Thirty (30) semester-hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience. Five (5) years of professional experience in medical-social work having responsibility for gathering medical information about clients, determining their needs, and planning and implementing medical social service plans geared to the needs of individual clients. OR Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and one (1) year of the above-mentioned professional experience. "Professional experience" refers to work that is analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range of basic knowledge of the profession's concepts and practices; and is performed with the authority to act and make accurate and informed decisions.
