Sanitation Driver is a local service title. It is filled by the counties, municipalities, authorities and other employers that have adopted civil service under Title 11A, not by State departments. Those employers set pay by ordinance or contract rather than from a State salary schedule, which is why most local titles carry no salary range here.

Definition
Under direction drives, cleans, services, and makes minor repairs to a sanitation truck; occasionally may perform manual and unskilled laboring work in connection with sanitation truck driving; does related work as required.
Examples of work
- Drives to landfill or other designated area and dumps refuse.
- Keeps check on pressure gauges for hydraulic pumps and other mechanisms.
- May be required to assist in loading sanitation truck.
- Cleans and greases sanitation truck.
- Makes minor repairs to sanitation truck.
- Keeps necessary records.
- May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
Experience
One (1) year of experience in driving a truck with tandem/dual rear axles and a gross vehicle weight of at least 26,000 pounds and with auxiliary equipment such as a snow plow, salt spreader, power take-off, winch, lift body, or hydraulic lifting device.
License
Appointees must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of the care, maintenance, competent, safe, and efficient operation of sanitation trucks, including cleaning, lubrication, servicing of batteries, care of tires, and of minor repair procedures.
- Knowledge of the use of air brakes, trolley brake control, and limiter valve, of the proper method of double clutching a transmission when shifting, and of the hydraulic system that operates tailgate and pusher plate.
- Knowledge of the difference between a synchromesh transmission and a constant transmission and how to operate them.
- Ability to analyze problems involving the operation of trucks.
- Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions.
- Ability to learn from explanations and demonstrations.
- Ability to drive trucks in a skilled and safe manner.
- Ability to check, clean, service, and make minor emergency repairs to trucks.
- Ability to keep necessary records.
- Ability to operate a transmission with a power take off.
- Ability to properly shift a five speed transmission with auxiliary transmission.
- Ability to recognize when hydraulic system is overloaded.
- Ability to recognize when hydraulic system is low on oil and to add proper amount of oil when needed and to properly read controlling gauges to prevent damage to equipment or injury to personnel.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
