Definition
Under direction, takes the lead over other Field Representatives and/or performs the more difficult tasks involved in conducting disease control inspections, investigations, and surveys; does other related work.
Examples of work
May take the lead over Field Representatives; and provides guidance and instruction. Performs the fieldwork required to promote the objectives of the public health program. Conducts serologic, epidemiological, and other public health surveys and follow-up activities. Compiles survey data and develops final determinations and evaluations. Confers with physicians, patients, disease contacts, and local government officials and their representatives to prepare case histories, reports, and other diagnostic or reported vital statistics information. Conducts investigations of reportable diseases and maintains liaison with hospitals, registrars, physicians, local and state health departments, and other cooperating agencies. Makes presentations to interested groups. Prepares clear, sound, accurate, and informative reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations. Institutes required control measures. Conducts investigations of unusual manifestations of diseases and reports findings to the State Department of Health. Disseminates information relative to outbreak of diseases. Maintains surveillance of carriers of causative agents of diseases. Inspects records. Analyze data to plan and evaluate programs for the prevention and control of diseases. Conducts investigations of diagnosed disease cases to ensure effective isolation and treatment, and to identify household and other close contacts. Ensures that disease contacts, suspects, and reactors are brought to examination and diagnosis. Collects data and reports significant findings of cases, contacts, and changes. Arranges for medical treatment of disease patients; arranges for in-home treatment and instruction when necessary. Ensures supervision of all cases of inactive tuberculosis for a period of five years. Promotes special handling procedures for patients having treatment-resistant diseases. Cooperates with the State Department of Health in the control of disease cases, contact suspects, and associates. Interviews sexually transmitted disease patients for contacts and suspects. Arranges the diagnosis and treatment of disease patients. Conducts educational programs for the prevention of sexually transmitted disease. Conducts in-home visit and provide advice, information and suggestions. Takes blood pressures and performs basic tests for the detection of diabetes at health clinics or other health programs. Attends and assists in conducting hypertension and diabetes screening programs at local health fairs. Make follow-up telephone calls to individuals awaiting testing results. Provides educational materials and information to individuals tested for chronic diseases. Maintains records and files. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge of public health methods of disease detection, prevention and control. Ability to read and interpret laws, rules and regulations and apply them to specific situations. Ability to conduct investigations and surveys. Ability to collect and analyze data. Ability to work cooperatively with patients, physicians, health departments and others. Ability to prepare accurate reports containing findings, conclusions and recommendations. Ability to maintain records and files. Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience. Five (5) years of professional experience in conducting public health investigations or inspections. OR Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and one (1) year of the above-mentioned professional experience. "Professional experience" refers to work that is analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range of basic knowledge of the profession's concepts and practices; and is performed with the authority to act and make accurate and informed decisions.
