Sewer Inspector is a local service title. It is filled by the counties, municipalities, authorities and other employers that have adopted civil service under Title 11A, not by State departments. Those employers set pay by ordinance or contract rather than from a State salary schedule, which is why most local titles carry no salary range here.

Definition
Under direction, inspects the construction, reconstruction, maintenance, and repair of sewers so as to bring about compliance with plans and specifications; does related work as required.
Examples of work
Sees that the specifications for storm sewers, catch basins, manholes, concrete headwalls and the erection and placement of signs are complied with. Sees that tools, machinery, and trucks are so used as to avoid accidents. Makes daily reports showing the status of the work in relation to plans and specifications. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording information systems used by the agency, office or related unit.
Experience
One (1) year of experience in street and/or sewer construction and maintenance work.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment used in the construction and maintenance of sewers. Knowledge of the problems encountered in obtaining compliance with plans and specifications. Knowledge of reducing notes and checking general field conditions. Knowledge of the establishment and maintenance of needed records. Knowledge of the preparation of reports from these records. Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions. Ability to read and interpret sewer plans and specifications. Ability to determine whether materials furnished comply with the specifications and take the steps necessary to bring about compliance. Ability to take and maintain a firm and correct stand when controversies arise. Ability to work harmoniously with associates, contractors, and others engaged in or concerned with sewer work. Ability to keep records and file reports. Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording information systems used by the agency, office or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication. Persons with mental or physical disabilities are eligible as long as they can perform the essential functions of the job after reasonable accommodation is made to their known limitations. If the accommodation cannot be made because it would cause the employer undue hardship, such persons may not be eligible.
