Definition

Under direction, is in charge of a shift and supervises and works with a group of operators engaged in operating and maintaining equipment at a sewage treatment facility; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

  • Supervises and works with a group of operators involved in operating, adjusting, and regulating sewage plant pumps, valves, and other equipment.
  • Periodically inspects plant and equipment for malfunctions and needed repairs, performs minor repairs, and lubricates machines and equipment.
  • Supervises and works with a group of operators involved in operating, adjusting, and regulating chemical feed machines, sludge digestion pumps, flow meters, valves, and other equipment.
  • Supervises and works with a group of operators involved in checking and adjusting the flow and levels in varied tanks and sludge chambers.
  • Supervises and works with a group of operators involved in maintaining proper liquid levels in pressure accumulators.
  • Supervises and works with a group of operators involved in operating the sewage plant incinerator.
  • Gives assignments and instructions to subordinates.
  • Prepares reports.
  • Maintains records and files.
  • Reviews performance of employees and determines assignments so as to use each to his/her best ability and achieve objectives of low cost and good quality of work output.
  • Supervises and leads activities of employees so as to attain optimum results in terms of cost, quality, and group morale.
  • Provides instruction and development opportunities for personnel, communicating agency policies and other pertinent information as appropriate.
  • Takes appropriate action when employees excel, meet, or fall below work performance standards.
  • Handles personal relationship with employees (interviewing, transferring, disciplining, and so forth) by applying sound supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Carries out agency policies and programs as they apply to the unit.
  • Performs special assignments as assigned by the superior. Prepares reports with recommendations.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

Three (3) years of experience in operating, adjusting, regulating, repairing, and maintaining pumps, valves, electric motors, and other electrical and mechanical equipment used in a sewage treatment plant.

License

Appointees may be required to possess a current and valid Public Wastewater Systems Operator License and/or a Public Water Treatment System Operator License of the appropriate class issued by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of procedures used in operating, adjusting, and regulating sewage plant pumps, valves, and other equipment.
  • Ability to analyze sewage plant operational problems.
  • Ability to organize assigned supervisory and other work.
  • Ability to develop effective work methods.
  • Ability to give assignments and instructions to employees and to evaluate their job performance.
  • Ability to prepare reports.
  • Ability to maintain records and files.
  • Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
