Definition

Under direction, supervises, coordinates, and works with a group of sewage plant repairers involved in the maintenance and repair of equipment including piping systems, motors, pumps, valves, etc., in a wastewater (sewage) treatment and disposal facility; does related work as required.

Examples of work

  • Provides assignments and instructions and supervises performance of workers engaged in routine maintenance and repair assignments.
  • Determines deadlines and priorities.
  • Determines the need for special equipment and materials for specific projects.
  • Participates in planning work projects.
  • Supervises and works with employees performing a variety of maintenance and repair tasks and maintaining mechanical equipment by adjusting pulleys, packings, and seals, and replacing belts, gears, chains, and bearings, and repacking pumps and valves, etc., to maintain equipment in working condition.
  • Welds metal components using general welding techniques; to repair plant equipment in accordance with acceptable standards.
  • Sets up scaffolding and/or uses hoists, wrenches, hammers, wedges, etc., to reach, lift, move or hold work pieces, or move them into position.
  • Performs general building repairs that may include broken windows, or concrete walks, painting walls, repair of window screens and storm sashes.
  • Performs preventative maintenance work; lubricates equipment (pumps, valves, motors), repacks pumps and valves.
  • Dismantles electric motors, pumps, hydraulic valves, chlorinators, flowmeters, and other mechanical equipment to gain access to or remove defective parts.
  • Cleans bar screens, removes sludge from drying beds, cleans and adjusts filter, bed spraying nozzles, disposes of waste and keeps the area in a sanitary condition.
  • Prepares reports and records.
  • May also operate sewage treatment equipment to control the flow and processing of sewage, in addition to repair duties.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

Three (3) years experience in the maintenance and repair of electric motors, pumps, valves and other mechanical equipment in a sewage treatment plant.

License

Appointees may be required to possess a current and valid Public Wastewater Systems Operator License and/or a Public Water Treatment System Operator License of the appropriate class issued by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of the standard tools, materials, and methods, used in the maintenance and repair of equipment found in a wastewater (sewage) treatment and disposal facility.
  • Knowledge of the proper use and care of a variety of power and hand tools and equipment used in treatment plant maintenance work.
  • Knowledge of the methods used to operate hoists.
  • Knowledge of the methods used to repair, adjust, regulate, and maintain chemical feed machines and chlorinators, sludge digestion pumps, flowmeters, and other sewage disposal mechanical equipment.
  • Knowledge of the methods used to clean sewage screens and beds.
  • Ability to repair and maintain sewage disposal mechanical equipment including sludge digestion pumps, chemical feed machines, chlorinators and flowmeters.
  • Ability to diagnose motor troubles and overhaul motors.
  • Ability to oil and lubricate and rebuild motors and clean and wash equipment.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with others.
  • Ability to provide assignments and instructions to staff and supervise their performance.
  • Ability to prepare or supervise the preparation of records and reports.
  • Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
