Definition
Under direction supervises staff in the title of Supervisor, Public Works and other employees involved in the installation, maintenance, and repair of public works facilities; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
May execute plans for effective use of available funds, personnel, equipment, materials, and supplies. Organizes and develops work programs for the varied functions of the department. Gives assignments and instructions to individuals/groups and supervises their work. Supervises staff engaged in the work involved in construction, maintenance, and repair of streets/sewers, and in installation, maintenance, and repair of pipes, valves, pumps, hydrants, and other water service equipment. Makes investigations of complaints and takes action to see that needed repairs are made with minimum delay. Supervises work involved in sweeping streets, operating street- sweeping machines, shoveling accumulations into containers or onto trucks; in loading, unloading, and applying sand and street repair materials; in cutting brush and mowing grass; and in emptying refuse containers, loading refuse, and disposing of refuse. Ensures that proper safety precautions are taken by employees. Inspects and checks work in progress or completed for conformance with proper procedures, efficient and economic work methods, and quantity/quality standards. Prepares reports. Obtains, stores, safeguards, and supervises use of needed equipment, materials, and supplies. Maintains records and files. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording information systems used by the agency, office or related unit.
Experience
Five (5) years of experience in work involving the construction, maintenance, and/or repair of streets, sewers, water, sanitation or other public works facilities or similar heavy construction or maintenance work, two (2) years of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of procedures for making routine/complex repairs to water/sewer equipment, and for construction, maintenance, and repair of streets. Ability to organize assigned work and give assignments/instructions to groups/individuals. Ability to prepare reports. Ability to maintain records and files. Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording information systems used by the agency, office or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication. Persons with mental or physical disabilities are eligible as long as they can perform the essential functions of the job after reasonable accommodation is made to their known limitations. If the accommodation cannot be made because it would cause the employer undue hardship, such persons may not be eligible.
