Senior Investigator Communicable Diseases is a local service title. Definition
Under direction, takes the lead over one or more investigators and investigates reported cases of one or more communicable diseases, and locates and advises exposed persons to obtain medical treatment and to prevent further spread of the disease; does other related duties.
Examples of work
- May assign work and take the lead over the activities of one or more investigators involved in locating persons of having tuberculosis, venereal disease, or other reportable communicable disease.
- Plans and/or develops investigatory procedures for a specified project and develops appropriate work methods.
- Plans meetings and other activities to facilitate communication within the agency and between the agency and the community.
- Gives lectures to various groups regarding the transmission and prevention of communicable disease and the medical treatment available for dealing with such diseases.
- Gives guidance and instructions to other investigators when difficult or unusual situations and/or problems are encountered.
- Locates and interviews exposed persons using information obtained from records of state or local public health departments, and from individual already under treatment for communicable disease.
- May advise person to obtain treatment from private physician or public health clinic.
- May take blood sample to identify presence of disease in suspected victim.
- Questions exposed person to obtain information concerning other persons who may have received exposure.
- Conducts followup interviews with patients and suspected carriers.
- Writes report of activities and findings.
- Visits physicians, laboratories, and community health facilities to stimulate reporting of cases of communicable disease.
- Supplies individual(s) with information on program, disease, treatment, fees, and so forth, to assist in the general effort to educate, inform, and encourage continuation in a treatment program (for example, immunization, communicable disease control measures, and so forth).
- May take sample of body fluids (for example, urine) or other specimen which does not involve specialized invasive procedures.
- Takes appropriate action to ensure referral and followup by other agencies or health personnel.
- Prepares reports on all phases of investigation which incudes information regarding individuals contacted, referrals made, and so forth.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
Two (2) years of investigatory experience.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

- Ability to organize, develop, and implement effective investigatory procedures and provide instructions and guidance to other workers.

- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
