Examples of work
Plans, implements, and oversees all health-related activities and health services administered to the student population. Administers first aid and patient assessment of students in response to accidents or illness during school hours and offers referrals for treatment as necessary. Serves as the primary point of contact for parents, guardians or other health care providers representing the school on health-related topics and policies. In this role, the school nurse will act as a liaison to coordinate both the routine and special health care considerations of the student population. Monitors students with chronic health conditions or other health considerations. i.e., life threatening allergies. Monitors student population for communicable diseases and adheres to guidelines from local and State health authorities in developing an emergency response plan to high levels of known or confirmed cases. Stores, monitors, and administers over the counter- and prescribed medications as appropriate and ordered by a prescribing physician. Verifies, maintains, and updates vaccination records. Performs mandated screenings and assessments on a routine or periodic basis. May offer counseling on health issues and instructions on personal hygiene and nutrition in a classroom setting or on an individual basis. Manages and oversees proper use of medical supplies. Establishes and maintains health records and files and ensures a high level of confidentiality. Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Education
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in nursing.
License
Registration as a Professional Nurse in the State of New Jersey. Appointees must possess a valid certificate as a School Nurse issued by The Department of Education or be eligible for a professional certificate as a School Nurse pursuant to N.J.S.A. 18A:40-3.8. Appointees must possess a current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillators (AED) certificate. Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of the nursing process, clinical nursing skills, techniques, and practices. Knowledge of the nursing process and ability to employ prescribed measures in adherence to an established health care plan to facilitate successful outcomes for the student population or a specific student. Knowledge of clean and sanitary conditions relating to the health office and other designated areas. Knowledge of techniques to educate children to observe and follow instructions regarding general health and hand hygiene. Knowledge of proper use and care of medical equipment and materials. Knowledge of creating and maintaining health records and files while ensuring a high level of confidentiality. Ability to administer first aid in cases of accident or illness, and to administer prescribed treatments. Ability to manage, prioritize and act to meet students' health care needs under unusual circumstances or challenging conditions. Ability to prepare and deliver clear, sound, accurate, and informative health reports to parents, school staff or other stakeholders containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations for policy implementation or an emergency response. Ability to identify and resolve problems, organize assigned work, and develop effective work methods. Ability to assist physicians in making medical and physical examinations of school children. Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, social service agencies, parent-teachers associations, and other schools or community organizations to meet the health care needs of a student. Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, make proper use of, and care for medical equipment, materials, and supplies. Ability to maintain and keep the confidentiality of health records. Ability to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
