Examples of work
- Within the Photography and Advertising Design laboratory, instructs students in the operations of the photostat machine, headliner, compugraphic typesetter, and camera lucidas.
- Instructs students in the operation of the photo enlargers, photo printing and drying equipment, 3M valor key process, photo lights, and lighting set-ups.
- Assists instructors during their photography and advertising design classes by producing set type, photostats, and headlines when required for class projects. Produces work using 3M color key process, vacuum former, and makes screened veloxes when requested.
- Assists the photography instructor in lighting set-ups, photo printing, dry mountings, and photo finishing.
- Maintains day and evening hours for Advertising Design and Photography laboratories for student use after regular class hours.
- Cleans up advertising and photography laboratories at the end of open hours.
- Prepares mixes and sets-up chemicals for both laboratories.
- Removes old chemicals and arranges for disposal. Cleans equipment and prepares them for new chemicals.
- Orders all supplies for advertising design and photography laboratories.
- Maintains and adjusts equipment in advertising design laboratory, e.g., photostat machine, headliner, and compugraphic typesetter; makes simple repairs; arranges for service calls for major repairs.
- Designs sets, and sets-up incandescent or strobe lighting for still photographs.
- Operates process cameras, view cameras, roll film and 38 mm cameras, photographic and diazo processing and printing equipment, and basic still and motion picture cameras.
- Makes photographic prints and transparencies in both black and white and color.
- Designs and produces mechanicals for printing signs, posters, pamphlets, brochures, catalogues, and so forth.
- Designs and produces instructional displays, slide films, slide sets, and drawings.
- Stores and retrieves original negatives, transparencies, and graphic arts pasteups.
- Regularly tests and adjusts all cameras, incandescent and strobe lighting, light meters, photographic and diazo printing and processing equipment, and so forth.
- Trains staff in photographic and graphic arts techniques.
- Maintains inventory of photographic and graphic arts equipment and materials.
- Maintains essential records and files.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Education
One (1) year of formal training at a vocational or technical school or college in audiovisual production, graphics, and photography, and/or electronic theory, practice, and equipment.
An Associate of Arts degree for Advertising Design Laboratory
Experience
Two (2) years of experience in graphic design, production, and photography.
One (1) year of experience graphic design, production, and photography.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of the principles and practices related to the advertising design and photography fields.
- Knowledge of photography processes which include enlarging, printing, dry mounting, finishing, 3M color key and lighting set-up.
- Knowledge of advertising design processes which includes 3M color key, vm forming, making screened veloxes, photostating, headlining, photo typesetting, and designing mechanicals.
- Knowledge of photography and advertising design equipment used in the instructional environment.
- Ability to perform simple repairs in the advertising design and photo laboratories.
- Ability to establish cooperative working relationships with faculty, students, and technical assistants.
- Ability to maintain records and perform operational business functions related to the photography and advertising design laboratories.
- Ability to apply established principles and practices related to the photography and advertising design laboratories.
- Ability to analyze photographic problems, organize assigned technical and photographic work, and develop effective work methods.
- Ability to compound and coordinate the compounding of the chemical solutions used in photographic work.
- Ability to maintain essential records and files.
- Ability to make photographic prints and transparencies in black and white and color.
- Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
