Definition

Under direction, performs routine environmental engineering work involved in designing, constructing, modifying, improving, planning, and/or maintaining facilities in order to solve or alleviate environmental problems; does related work as required.

Examples of work

  • Assists in the conducting of special air, noise, or water pollution investigations, and inspections and surveys of proposed site plans.
  • Provides interpretation of rules, regulations, and policies concerning air, noise, or water pollution control within the scope of assigned activities.
  • Collects and prepares data for environmental statements consisting of air studies, noise, and water studies, and socio-economic factors on proposed site plans.
  • Reviews and interprets plans and specifications.
  • Participates in drafting specifications.
  • Devises the sampling plans using engineering procedures.
  • Collects data, and prepares or participates in preparing clear, technically sound, accurate, and informative reports on the findings of investigations, inspections, surveys, or tests.
  • Prepares layout and detail drawings from specific instructions, notes, or sketches, performing calculations such as; pressure loss, required capacities, size of piping, etc.
  • Studies engineering manuals, periodicals, manufacturer's publications, and other technical material to obtain information on material, equipment, and pertinent data to be used by higher level engineers in the development of specifications or technical reports.
  • Visits facility or construction sites to obtain information on environment factors or conditions of existing facilities or systems, taking measurements and calculating flows, and measuring plume density and sizing particulates.
  • Reviews architect-engineer or contractor drawings for adherence to contract specifications, referring deviations to a supervisor or higher level engineer.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Education

Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major course of study in civil, sanitary, environmental, chemical, or mechanical engineering.

Experience

One (1) year of experience in environmental engineering.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of air, noise, and water pollution control.
  • Knowledge of laboratory testing related to air, noise, and water pollution control.
  • Knowledge of the methods used to obtain samples, prepare them for testing and ensure the proper degree of accuracy in making tests.
  • Knowledge of the varied types, and the proper use and maintenance of field and laboratory apparatus and equipment used in the physical, biological, and chemical testing of samples of air and water.
  • Knowledge of environmental engineering principles, concepts, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of chemistry, biological sciences, and public health as they relate to environmental matters.
  • Ability to organize assigned field and office work and develop effective work methods.
  • Ability to apply the state and federal rules and regulations relating to air, noise, and water pollution control.
  • Ability to conduct required field surveys, studies, and investigations and prepare reports.
  • Ability to contact with the public and with other governmental agencies in matters relating to air, noise, and water pollution control.
  • Ability to follow testing procedures and to make minor deviations when circumstances warrant.
  • Ability to apply engineering practices, principles, methods, and techniques to perform limited environmental engineering designs such as the preparation of layout and detailed drawings.
  • Ability to utilize relevant aspects of chemistry, biological sciences, and public health to the control or elimination of environmental pollutants.
  • Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
