Definition
Under supervision of a Maintenance Worker 1 or other supervisory official in a state department, institution, or agency, improves and maintains the physical condition of state property primarily by performing routine manual work; does other related duties as required. NOTE: The examples of work for this title are for illustrative purposes only. A particular position using this title may not perform all duties listed in this job specification. Conversely, all duties performed on the job may not be listed.
Examples of work
May assist with and make the simpler repairs to plumbing, electrical wiring, fences, fireplaces, roofs, tables, benches, and other property. Cuts wood and grass. Clears trails. Cleans campsites, picnic grounds, trails, and beaches. Disposes of trash. Helps with erosion control and builds fire lines. May assist with planting and transplanting of trees, transplanting and caring for seedlings, and trimming trees, shrubbery, and sprout growths. Helps to build and repair dams, bridges, septic tanks, and French drains. Paints the inside and outside of buildings. Does simple masonry work. Sharpens tools. Erects and repairs posters and signs. Operates all types of power equipment including bulldozers, power shovels, front-end loaders, trucks, and snow plows. May help to oversee work of seasonal employees and/or inmates assigned to maintenance work. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position. Appointees may be required to possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of procedures and equipment used in construction and maintenance of buildings and grounds Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions. Ability to learn from explanations and demonstrations Ability to do simple construction, maintenance, and repair work on buildings and grounds. Ability to cooperate with coworkers and to be courteous to all. Ability to supervise the work of seasonal employees and inmates. Ability to operate varied types of power equipment. Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
