Definition
Under supervision, in the Department of Transportation, performs unskilled or semi-skilled manual work involved in state highway maintenance operations which may involve a variety of duties requiring physical exertion, manipulative ability, and the routine use of hand, machine, or power tools; in the absence of the regular Truck Driver, or during emergencies, or as the work load dictates, operates trucks, tractor mowers, or other maintenance equipment; does related work as required.
Examples of work
- Performs manual work of all types for the maintenance of highways, roadsides, and appurtenances.
- Uses bituminous materials and various aggregates for the repair and maintenance of state highway pavements and shoulders. Repairs all types of pavements and shoulders using standard patching techniques; cleans and pours joints; cleans and seals cracks.
- Repairs, cleans, and maintains drainage systems (including ditches requiring hand cleaning) and structures of all types.
- Mows grass; cuts weeds, clears brush; maintains slopes and roadsides; picks up litter and debris.
- Repairs, paints, and maintains guard rails.
- Operates small power mowers and other less complex power equipment or power tools.
- Performs manual labor in connection with force account construction work, as required.
- Cleans and paints various kinds of department equipment.
- Drives trucks or tractor mowers of various types as required, including trucks used for highway maintenance work, road oiling, snow plowing line striping, ice control work, or mowing operations, and other motorized equipment; assists with the repair and installation of snow plows and spreaders.
- Picks up materials, loads them on the truck, and delivers them when operating in the capacity if relief driver.
- Checks, cleans, washes, and makes minor adjustments to trucks, tractors, and other motorized equipment, and may be required to grease and change the oil of motorized equipments.
- As required, acts as a service attendant by dispersing fuel, oil, and other related supplies.
- Assists in the fabrication, repair, and installation of highway signs.
- Assists in the painting of traffic stripes.
- May perform mathematical calculations to estimate material or labor needed or used to complete work assignments.
- When operating as a relief driver or operator, keeps simple records of receipts, deliveries, fuel consumption, and mileage.
- Responds to all emergency situations required to protect the public, including setting barriers and/or warning devices and performing ice control and snow removal operations.
- Performs the duty of a flagger to protect a work area, and direct the traffic around it.
- Is required to perform any type emergency work after normal work hours as the specific emergency dictates within the established rate code for this level.
- May be required to apply pesticides under the direct supervision of a Licensed Pesticide Applicator.
- May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- <b>REQUIREMENTS
- EXPERIENCE:</b>
- One (1) year of experience in laboring work.
License
Appointees must possess a valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of the care of maintenance equipment, including cleaning, lubrication, servicing of batteries, care of tires, and lights.
- Knowledge of the proper use and care of hand, machine, and power tools.
- Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor for prolonged period of time under varying temperatures and climatic conditions.
- Ability to maintain simple records.
- Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
