Definition

Under close supervision and instruction, assists an electrician and develops a working knowledge of the standard tools, materials, methods, practices, occupational hazards, and safety precautions involved in performing routine general electrical work such as the installation of electrical facilities; works with various hand tools and the more simple machine tools common to the trade, while receiving formal instructions and training in the theory and practice of all phases of electricity.

Examples of work

  • Assists in the installing, maintaining, inspecting and servicing of high and low tension power and light feeders, generating and control equipment, relays, transformers, motors, pumps, switches, outlets, appliances and signaling systems.
  • Learns the use and nomenclature of various types of test equipment such as ammeters, voltmeters, and ohmmeters.
  • Learns to troubleshoot various malfunctions and breakdowns and make appropriate repairs or recommendations.
  • Works from electrical schematics, plans and specifications in accordance with the electrical code or accepted trade practices.
  • Periodically receives regularly scheduled instructions in the use and care of all equipment and supplies.
  • Attends periodic lectures, discussions, and demonstrations.
  • Receives periodic evaluations of performance, and as skill develops, performs the more difficult work assignments.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

  • Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Ability to take needed safety precautions in performing the work.
  • Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, and properly use needed equipment, materials and supplies.
  • Ability to maintain simple records.
  • Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
  • Persons with mental or physical disabilities are eligible as long as they can perform essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation. If the accommodation cannot be made because it would cause the employer undue hardship, such persons may not be eligible.
  • <b>ADVANCEMENT:</b>
  • Appointee's work performance will be reviewed and rated semi-annually during each twelve (12) months of the three (3) year apprenticeship program. Upon successful completion of the thirty- six (36) month apprenticeship program, appointees will be eligible for advancement to the title of Electrician in accordance with Civil Service Commission procedures.
  • The inability of an appointee in the Apprentice title to attain the required level of performance stipulated in each of the twelve (12) month training periods shall be considered cause for separation from employment.
