BOROUGH CLERK
The clerk is the borough's recordkeeper and its administrative hinge: minutes of the governing body, ordinances, elections, licences, and the custody of the municipal seal and archives. Much of what a resident needs from a borough goes across the clerk's desk.
New Jersey requires municipal clerks to hold a Registered Municipal Clerk certificate, issued by the Division of Local Government Services after coursework and examination. That certification is the qualifying route rather than a Commission examination, which is why no specification appears here.
Boroughs are only one of New Jersey's municipal forms. Townships, cities and towns carry their own clerk titles, and the duties are broadly the same in each.
