Definition

Under supervision, stocks a central supply room; orders, stores, monitors, prepares and dispenses equipment and supplies; does related work as required.

Examples of work

  • Scrubs and washes surgical instruments, containers and equipment.
  • Sterilizes equipment, instruments, surgical linen and supplies, such as surgical packs and treatment trays, using autoclave, sterilizer or aseptic solutions.
  • Prepares packs of instruments, supplies, and treatment and dressing trays, according to designated lists or codes.
  • Wraps, labels and seals packs.
  • Prepares solutions such as saline and glucose according to formula.
  • Stores prepared articles and supplies in designated areas.
  • Fills requisitions.
  • Inventories equipment and supplies.
  • Dispenses equipment and supplies.
  • Writes charges.
  • Trains others in aseptic techniques and care of equipment.
  • Prepares and maintains suitable records, reports and files.
  • May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply the policies and procedures necessary to stock and keep a central supply room.
  • Ability to reach, lift, bend and stoop to retrieve, place, move and stock equipment and supplies.
  • Ability to handle, dispense and prepare requisitions for equipment and supplies.
  • Ability to maintain suitable records and files.
  • Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position. American Sign Language or Braille also may be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
