Definition
Under direction, maintains order and discipline among children, and performs nonprofessional and manual duties involved in the care and custody of children both in the residence and in activities outside the facility; does related work as required.
Examples of work
- Supervises the dressing and undressing of children.
- Sees that children keep themselves physically neat and clean.
- Supervises the cleaning of all assigned areas.
- Works with children in the cleaning of all assigned areas.
- Washes dishes and laundry.
- Makes beds.
- Supervises children at their recreation periods.
- Teaches children games and participates in these games.
- Assists doctors and nurses attending children.
- May administer medications such as aspirins, cough medicine, first aid, and so forth.
- Transports and supervises children while escorting them to work, church, school, court, or for medical purposes.
- Observes the actions of children at all times.
- Picks up and delivers various medical, educational, recreational, or maintenance supplies or materials.
- May take calls or messages at the reception desk or perform clerical work in the admittance of children.
- Notifies supervisors and takes suitable action when unusual instances occur.
- Prepares simple reports and keeps records.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of problems likely to be encountered in work dealing with children taken away from their homes and familiar surroundings, and being deprived of their accustomed freedom.
- Knowledge of methods used to encourage and assist children towards better social adjustment.
- Knowledge of the preparation and keeping of simple reports and records.
- Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written instructions and assignments.
- Ability to organize assigned custodial and other work.
- Ability to comprehend problems of children.
- Ability to work harmoniously with associates and superior officers.
- Ability to take the lead in working with groups of children.
- Ability to keep buildings and areas in a clean and neat condition with or without the help of children.
- Ability to assist with recreation activities.
- Ability to assume responsibility for physical well-being and mental well-being of children.
- Ability to patrol ward, dormitories, and buildings at night and to notify proper supervisory officers when unusual cases, irregularities, accidents, fires, or illnesses occur.
- Ability to prepare reports and to keep detailed and accurate records.
- Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
