Where this title is used

Electrician's Helper is a local service title. It is filled by the counties, municipalities, authorities and other employers that have adopted civil service under Title 11A, not by State departments. Those employers set pay by ordinance or contract rather than from a State salary schedule, which is why most local titles carry no salary range here.

Definition

Under direct supervision, assists an electrician and develops a working knowledge of the standard tools, materials, methods, practices, occupational hazards, and safety precautions involved in electrical and general maintenance work; performs routine general electrical work such as maintenance and the less difficult tasks involved in installation, inspection, repair, and servicing of electrical circuits and equipment; works with various hand tools and basic testing equipment common to the electrical trade; may be called on to do other types of general maintenance work; does related work as required.

Examples of work

  • Replaces switches, fixtures, bulbs, cords, circuits, bells, buzzers, outlets, control equipment, and appliances.
  • Uses soldering equipment.
  • Makes splices.
  • Troubleshoots malfunctions using a test light or other simple testing equipment.
  • Oils, greases, and maintains appliances and equipment.
  • Sets up and adjusts portable light and sound systems.
  • Works with drills, chisels, screwdrivers, pliers, wire cutters, and other basic hand tools.
  • Replaces or installs boxes and conduits.
  • Cleans tools and equipment.
  • Works from simple sketches or work orders.
  • Keeps essential records.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of the standard tools, materials, methods, practices, occupational hazards, and safety precautions involved in electrical work.
  • Knowledge of basic color coding and cable types used in house circuits.
  • Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Ability to take safety precautions in performing work.
  • Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, and properly use equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Ability to maintain essential records and files.
  • Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
