Where this title is used

Exterminator Trainee is a local service title. It is filled by the counties, municipalities, authorities and other employers that have adopted civil service under Title 11A, not by State departments. Those employers set pay by ordinance or contract rather than from a State salary schedule, which is why most local titles carry no salary range here.

Definition

Under close supervision, receives on-the-job training in the prevention, control, and elimination of insects, vermin, and other pests from building and surrounding areas; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

  • Under close supervision, as a trainee and productive worker:
  • Learns how to exterminate and remove insects, vermin, and other pests using the most effective treatment methods.
  • Assists in inspecting premises, identifying sources of infestation, and extent of property damage.
  • Learns to select, handle, store, and prepare traps, insecticides, rodenticides, etc. to be used in exterminations.
  • Learns to estimate costs of extermination services.
  • Assists in responding to pest complaints and inquiries.
  • Maintains cleanliness in assigned areas after job completion.
  • Maintains essential records and files.
  • Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

License

Appointees must successfully complete training and obtain valid certification and licensure as a Commercial Pesticide Applicator issued by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection within the training period.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions pertaining to work methods, techniques, and other related assignments.
  • Ability to understand and retain information about insects, vermin, and other pests, such as basic physical characteristics in various stages of development, habits, and breeding patterns.
  • Ability to handle, lift, and carry materials and equipment utilized in extermination processes.
  • Ability to write and prepare reports.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service.
  • Ability to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
  • Persons with mental or physical disabilities are eligible if they can perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation. If the accommodation cannot be made because it would cause the employer undue hardship, such persons may not be eligible.
  • <b>ADVANCEMENT:</b>
  • Appointees who successfully complete the twelve (12) month training period will be eligible for advancement to the Exterminator title () in accordance with the New Jersey Civil Service procedures.
  • The inability of an employee in this trainee title to attain a level of performance warranting advancement to Exterminator shall be considered a cause for separation.

Prior to obtaining certification, appointees must work under the direct supervision of a licensed Commercial Pesticide Applicator when using and applying pesticides, pursuant to N.J.A.C. 7:30.

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
