Definition

Under direction of nursing staff, performs various patient care activities and related nonprofessional services necessary in caring for the personal needs and comfort of patients; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

  • Bathes, dresses, and undresses patients.
  • Gives alcohol rubs.
  • Takes and records temperature, pulse, and respiration rates.
  • Measures and records food intake and output.
  • Transports patients to treatment units or assists them in walking.
  • May apply ice bags and hot water bottles.
  • May help patients with clothing for examinations and treatments.
  • Reports all unusual conditions to the nurse in charge.
  • Changes bed linens and maintains general cleanliness and order in the room.
  • May collect charts, records, and reports and delivers same to authorized personnel.
  • May collect and store supplies and equipment used in the unit.
  • Serves food trays and feeds patients requiring help.
  • Provides patients with drinking water.
  • Gives routine enemas as directed by nursing staff.
  • May be assigned to work in the maternity ward in which case employee may be required to bathe, weigh, dress, and feed newborn babies.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of methods and problems involved in performing various nonprofessional nursing work in tending to patients.
  • Knowledge of nursing supplies and equipment.
  • Ability to relate to people.
  • Ability to take, understand, and follow orders.
  • Ability to perform a variety of repetitive duties involving aid to patients.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the position.
  • Ability to read gauges and thermometers.
  • Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
