Lead Poisoning Inspector is a local service title. It is filled by the counties, municipalities, authorities and other employers that have adopted civil service under Title 11A, not by State departments. Definition

Under direction, performs routine work involved in inspecting dwellings that are suspected sources of lead poisoning; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

  • Inspects buildings and dwellings for possible sources of lead poisoning.
  • Collects samples of paint from dwelling and delivers sample to laboratory.
  • Reinspects entire buildings when positive samples are discovered, and collects samples from each dwelling unit for testing.
  • Confers with individual property owners relevant to service of notices and violations.
  • Reinspects dwellings after completion of repairs to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • May assist in coordinating duties with other concerned agencies.
  • Attends meetings.
  • Prepares reports.
  • Presents inspection findings in court cases.
  • Maintains essential records and files.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

License

Applicants will be required to possess a Lead Inspector/Risk Assessor Permit issued by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services.

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

  • Knowledge of problems involved in making investigations of suspected lead poisoning areas.
  • Ability to comprehend established rules and regulations of a limited complexity.
  • Ability to interview persons of varying backgrounds.
  • Ability to use tact and courtesy in making investigations.
  • Ability to observe significant conditions.
  • Ability to prepare reports.
  • Ability to maintain essential records and files.
  • Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
