Where this title is used

Morgue Attendant is a local service title. It is filled by the counties, municipalities, authorities and other employers that have adopted civil service under Title 11A, not by State departments. Those employers set pay by ordinance or contract rather than from a State salary schedule, which is why most local titles carry no salary range here.

Examples of work

  • Collects specimens from laboratory and disposes of same.

Requirements

Possession of a valid New Jersey driver's license may be required.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Some knowledge of the tasks involved in a morgue and of procedures used in preserving specimens and preparing solutions.
  • Knowledge of the problems encountered in dealing with members of medical professions, undertakers and the general public.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position. Communication may include such forms as American Sign Language or braille.
  • Ability to weigh and measure organs and specimens removed from the body.
  • Ability to carry out repetitive tasks according to set procedures; to preserve specimens and solutions.
  • Ability to move bodies and to perform cleaning tasks.
  • Persons with mental or physical disabilities are eligible as long as they can perform the essential functions of the job after reasonable accommodation is made to their known limitations. If the accommodation cannot be made because it would cause the employer undue hardship, such persons may not be eligible.
