Municipal Prosecutor is a local service title. It is filled by the counties, municipalities, authorities and other employers that have adopted civil service under Title 11A, not by State departments. Those employers set pay by ordinance or contract rather than from a State salary schedule, which is why most local titles carry no salary range here.

Definition
Under direction, prosecutes violations of criminal and motor vehicle statutes on behalf of the State and, in addition, prosecutes violations of municipal ordinances in behalf of the municipality; does related work as required.
Examples of work
- Prosecutes contested motor vehicle cases.
- Prosecutes violations of municipal ordinances such as disorderly person's charges.
- Prosecutes contested dog bite cases.
- Prosecutes violations, of the municipal plumbing, health, electrical and building codes.
- Prosecutes indictable criminal charges such as the passing of bad checks over two hundred dollars in value.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
Education
Admission to practice as an Attorney-at-Law in the State 'of New Jersey.
Experience
Five (5) years of experience as an Attorney-at-Law.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of state statutes and municipal ordinances and their application to specific cases.
- Knowledge of the problems involved in interpreting legal documents and in preparing answers, stipulations, briefs, transcripts of records, and decrees and of the preparation of memoranda relating to the law and suitable answers.
- Ability to interpret existing laws and ordinances.
- Ability to plan and put into operation the necessary legal steps on behalf of the municipality in litigated cases.
- Ability to prepare answers, stipulations, briefs and decrees; to confer with members of the bar and with other persons interested in or concerned with the work of the municipality.
- Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
