Definition
Under direction, oils and greases moving parts of friction surfaces of mechanical equipment; does related work as required.
Examples of work
Oils and greases moving parts of friction surfaces of mechanical equipment, such as shaft and motor bearings, sprockets, drive chains, gears and pulleys. Fills containers such as oil cans, grease guns, or tanks of lubrication trucks with specified lubricant. Forces grease into bearing with a grease gun. Smears grease on friction surfaces, or packs grease cups by hand. Reports machinery defects or malfunctions to supervisor. Assists workers involved in operating various types of equipment used to move machinery, equipment or materials. Affixes ropes, cables, chains, slings or other grappling attachments to objects being lifted or to lifting machinery. Acts as a spotter for heavy equipment operators. Assists in moving heavy equipment from one location to another. Performs unskilled laboring work as required. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in NJ only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of the standard tools, materials, methods and practices necessary in greasing parts and machinery on heavy equipment. Ability to understand, remember and carry out oral and written directions. Ability to take needed safety precautions in performing the work. Ability to obtain, store, safeguard and properly use needed equipment, materials and supplies. Ability to maintain simple records. Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication. Persons with mental or physical disabilities are eligible as long as they can perform essential functions of the job after reasonable accommodation is made to their known limitations. If the accommodation cannot be made because it would cause the employer undue hardship, such persons may not be eligible.
