Optometrist is a local service title. It is filled by the counties, municipalities, authorities and other employers that have adopted civil service under Title 11A, not by State departments. Those employers set pay by ordinance or contract rather than from a State salary schedule, which is why most local titles carry no salary range here.

Definition
Under direction, examines the eyes for defects that can be corrected by lenses, prisms or eye exercises; does other related duties.
Examples of work
Conducts retinoscopic examinations to determine approximate error of refraction. Conducts ophthalmoscopic examinations to examine external and internal anatomy of eye for pathology. Conducts amblyoscopic examinations to determine fusion ability of eyes for single binocular vision. Using pseudiosochramatic plates for color examinations, determines colorblindness. Determines visual acuity and accommodative power of the eyes. Tests muscle balance vertically and horizontally at far and near. Uses trial lenses and trial frames. Checks symptoms of client and length of time since last eye examination. Maintains records and files. Prepares correspondence. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Education
Graduation from an accredited school or college of optometry with a degree of Doctor of Optometry.
License
Applicants will be required to possess a valid license to practice optometry in the State of New Jersey. Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in NJ only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of the principles and practices of optometry. Knowledge of the types of ophthalmoscopic examinations. Knowledge of retinoscopic examination procedures. Knowledge of amblyoscopic examination procedures. Ability to diagnose eye defects. Ability to prescribe corrective lenses. Ability to provide clients with the appropriate eyes tests. Ability to detect vision problems. Ability to maintains records and files. Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication. Persons with mental or physical disabilities are eligible as long as they can perform essential functions of the job after reasonable accommodation is made to their known limitations. If the accommodation cannot be made because it would cause the employer undue hardship, such persons may not be eligible.
