Where this title is used

Painter's Helper is a local service title. It is filled by the counties, municipalities, authorities and other employers that have adopted civil service under Title 11A, not by State departments. Those employers set pay by ordinance or contract rather than from a State salary schedule, which is why most local titles carry no salary range here.

Definition

Under direct supervision, develops a working knowledge of standard tools, materials, methods, practices, occupational hazards, and safety precautions involved in performing routine general painting work and with surface preparation and application of paints, varnishes, stains, and other materials to metal, wood, masonry, and composition surfaces; works with various kinds of brushes, accessory materials, rollers, hardware, and equipment common to the painting trade; may be called on to do other types of general maintenance work; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

  • Erects and uses scaffolding such as ladders, window jacks, ladder jacks, aluminum or metal prefabricated scaffolding, or wooden scaffolding.
  • May be called on to work from a swing stage already set in place.
  • May add a single colorant to a white base to match a color.
  • Uses brushes and rollers to apply paint to metal, wood, masonry, and composition surfaces.
  • Paints and primes interiors and exteriors.
  • Reputties sashes and may make minor repairs prior to painting.
  • Properly prepares surface and applies enamels, oil paints, water base paints, lacquers, shellacs, and other types of paints, varnishes, and stains.
  • Uses thinners, solvents, and driers.
  • Uses primers and sealers, paint removers, spackling compounds, and other accessory materials.
  • Breaks in, uses, cleans, and cares for various kinds of brushes and equipment items.
  • Clean tools and equipment.
  • May work from instructions or work orders.
  • Maintains essential records and files.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of standard tools, materials, methods, practices, occupational hazards, and safety precautions involved in general painting work after a period of training.
  • Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Ability to take safety precautions in performing the work.
  • Ability to differentiate between various colors and hues.
  • Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, and properly use equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Ability to maintain essential records.
  • Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
