(f) Physicians, surgeons and dentists;
A title in the State unclassified service sits outside Title 11A unless a provision says otherwise. In practice that means no competitive examination to get the job, and none of the career service protections that come with it: no permanent status after a working test period, and no right of appeal to the Civil Service Commission from a removal. Appointment and removal rest with the appointing authority.

Where this title is used
Pediatrician is a local service title. It is filled by the counties, municipalities, authorities and other employers that have adopted civil service under Title 11A, not by State departments. Those employers set pay by ordinance or contract rather than from a State salary schedule, which is why most local titles carry no salary range here.

Definition
Under direction, provides medical care to young patients ranging in age from newborn to young adults; examines, diagnoses and treats patients with a variety of injuries and illnesses; administers immunizations; performs wellness check-ups; does related work as required.
Examples of work
- Examines patients to assess general physical condition.
- Recommends and designs a plan of treatment for patients.
- Tracks and administers immunizations to infants, children, adolescents and young adults.
- Works closely with other healthcare professionals to provide patients with the best possible medical care.
- Ensures that patients reach milestones in growth, development, behavior and skills.
- Advises patients, parents, guardians and/or community members concerning diet, activity, hygiene and disease prevention.
- Monitors patients' conditions and progress, and reevaluates treatments as necessary.
- Orders tests for nurses and other healthcare staff to perform.
- Explains medical procedures and discusses test results/prescribed treatments with patients and parents/guardians.
- Directs and coordinates activities of nurses, students, assistants, specialists, therapists and other medical staff.
- Prescribes medication and gives detailed instructions for administration.
- Supervises and directs other patient care personnel in the treatment of individual patients.
- Refers patients to other medical specialists and healthcare practitioners when necessary.
- Updates charts and patient information to illustrate current findings and treatments.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
License
Possession of a valid New Jersey State medical license.
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

- Ability to read, write, speak, understand or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
