Examples of work

• Plans a balanced physical education program which contributes to physical, mental, emotional, and social development.
• Prepares physical education instruction which utilizes a wide range of relevant equipment/apparatus.
• Conducts classes in such areas as calisthenics, first-aid, and hygiene.
• Plans health programs for adult groups.
• Instructs individuals/groups in beginning, intermediate, or advance calisthenics, gymnastics, or corrective exercises.
• Determines type and level of difficulty of exercises and corrections needed utilizing students expertise and ability.
• Provides individualized instruction and remedial techniques when necessary.
• Gives instruction in proper operation/handling of gym equipment.
• Ensures equipment is properly maintained.
• Evaluates progress/achievement of each individual receiving instruction.
• Maintains instruction plans, pupil records, and evaluative data.

Education

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Knowledge of methods and techniques utilized to provide physical education and first aid instruction.
• Knowledge of techniques used in group activities.
• Ability to conduct classes in calisthenics, gymnastics, and first- aid and to determine students' abilities, interests, and needs.
• Ability to prepare and maintain records.
• Ability to analyze, comprehend, and interpret problems pertinent to the work involved.
• Ability to organize assigned work and develop effective work methods.
• Ability to observe and report conditions of participants.
• Ability to work with a variety of individuals and establish a favorable learning environment.
• Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
• Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
