Plumber's Helper is a local service title. It is filled by the counties, municipalities, authorities and other employers that have adopted civil service under Title 11A, not by State departments. Those employers set pay by ordinance or contract rather than from a State salary schedule, which is why most local titles carry no salary range here.

Definition
Under direct supervision develops a working knowledge of standard tools, materials, methods, practices, occupational hazards, and safety precautions involved in performing routine general plumbing such as maintenance and less difficult tasks involved in installation of plumbing facilities; works with various hand tools and the more simple machine tools common to the trade; may be called on to do other types of general maintenance work; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
- Repairs and maintains gas, water, and waste disposal pipes and facilities.
- Installs the less complicated facilities and fittings.
- Troubleshoots common malfunctions and makes emergency and permanent repairs.
- Clears stopped up drains, pipes, and facilities using a plumber's snake or other device.
- Repacks faucets and valves.
- Installs washer kits.
- Repairs leaks.
- Installs new parts.
- Measures, cuts, reams, and threads pipes.
- Repairs and replaces steel, cast iron, soil, and copper pipe and fittings.
- May cover piping and fittings with asbestos or other compositions.
- May make simple plumbing tests on completed installations.
- Cleans tools and equipment.
- Works from simple sketches or work orders.
- Maintains simple records.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

- Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions.
- Ability to take needed safety precautions in performing the work.
- Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, and properly use equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Ability to maintain records.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
