Where this title is used

Pump Room Attendant is a local service title. It is filled by the counties, municipalities, authorities and other employers that have adopted civil service under Title 11A, not by State departments. Those employers set pay by ordinance or contract rather than from a State salary schedule, which is why most local titles carry no salary range here.

Definition

Under direction in a pump room or similar control center set apart from boilers of a heating system, keeps watch over the operation of pumps and other components that circulate fluids used in heating or cooling a large building, and performs routine maintenance and repair work; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

  • Adjusts valves and related controls to regulate the level of heating, cooling, and hot water supplied to various sections of a large building.
  • Makes periodic readings of gauges to ensure that proper valves of temperature, pressure, and flow are being maintained in steam, water, and coolant lines and/or in air ducts.
  • Maintains proper water level in heat exchangers and drains condensation from compressor tanks.
  • Maintains watch over the operation of pumps, compressors, and blowers and shuts down malfunctioning units.
  • Places standby units in operation when necessary.
  • Lubricates motors, replaces belting, repacks stuffing boxes, and repairs minor leaks in the system.
  • Removes rust, loose paint, and restores defective pipe insulation.
  • Paints components of the system and work area.
  • Makes major repairs on pumps, compressors, blowers, piping, and other components of the system.
  • Maintains cleanliness of pump room or control center.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of standard tools, materials, methods, practices, hazards, and safety precautions involved in tending pumps, compressors, blowers, heat exchangers, and in making routine repairs to plumbing and electrical components and machinery.
  • Knowledge of methods, supplies, and materials used in washing and cleaning pump room equipment and environs.
  • Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to read standard gauges indicating temperatures, pressures, fluid flow, and water levels.
  • Ability to take safety precautions in performing the work.
  • Ability to perform general maintenance work.
  • Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
