Definition

Under direction of the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent of Recreation or Recreation Supervisor, is responsible for the recreation program for a single recreation center; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

Plans, initiates, organizes, and directs an extensive program of activities for a single center area. Trains, evaluates, and advises assigned recreation personnel. May assist in interpreting the recreation center's program to the general public. Coordinates activities at the recreation center. Prepares reports and correspondence. Maintains records and essential files. Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

License

Possession of a valid certification as a Recreation Administrator issued by the New Jersey Board of Recreation Examiners may be required. Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

Ability to plan, initiate, and organize a recreation program. Ability to provide assignments and instruction to staff and supervise their work. Ability to enlist the interest of concerned people and encourage their participation in the organized program. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with coworkers and others involved in the work of the unit and the public. Ability to prepare reports. Ability to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience. Five (5) years of professional experience in planning, initiating, and organizing an extensive program of activities for a single recreation center. OR Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and one (1) year of the above-mentioned professional experience. OR Possession of a bachelor's degree in recreation or completion of one (1) year of specialized graduate training in recreation. "Professional experience" refers to work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the profession's principles, concepts, theories, and practices; and is performed with the authority to act according to one's own judgment and make accurate and informed decisions.
