Definition
Under direction, conducts inspections of bridges, repair of bridges, and investigates complaints to ensure compliance of support structures; does related work as required.
Examples of work
- Inspects bridges to ensure that they comply with plans and specifications.
- Reports on the condition of bridges and alerts supervisor of any structural defects and need for repairs that currently exist.
- Re-inspects to ensure bridge repairs have been made in accordance with accepted procedures.
- Investigates complaints on bridge conditions.
- Investigates bridge accidents.
- Ensures that specification for Guide Rails and sections, support structures and abutments, concrete face, parapets, and decking, box and pipe culverts, and road surfaces are complied with, and that only permissible variations within allowable tolerances occur.
- Photographs and documents all structural defects for review and identification.
- Photographs all accidents that occur on bridge and box and pipe culverts for review.
- Maintains a file of each defect on all bridges and inspection reports for review.
- Maintains daily reports showing status of the work in relation to plans and specifications.
- May remove vegetative growth and debris to gain access to bridge structure.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
Two (2) years of experience in the maintenance, repair and/or construction of bridges.
License
Appointees will be required to posses a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

- Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used to construct, reconstruct, and maintain bridges.
- Knowledge of the problems encountered in obtaining compliance with plans and specifications.
- Knowledge of the methods used to read and interpret plans and specifications.
- Knowledge of the methods used to conduct inspections.
- Ability to make mathematical calculations.
- Ability to establish and maintain records.
- Ability to prepare reports.
- Ability to analyze bridge maintenance problems
- Ability to identify problems with the condition of the bridge
- Ability to check general field conditions
- Ability to read and interpret bridge plans and specifications
- Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

Positions conducting inspection of bridges greater than 20'require certification as a Level III or IV Bridge Safety Inspector under the National Society of Professional Engineer's Program for National Certification in Engineering Technologies.
