Definition
Under direction, performs a variety of the more complex maintenance and repair tasks involved either singularly or in any combination thereof in the following fields: masonry, plastering, carpentry, painting, plumbing, steam fitting, sheet metal, electrical, glazing, and mechanical; may lead a small maintenance unit; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
Performs routine work involved in creating concrete structures. Constructs and finishes simple forms. Mixes and pours cement and aggregates. Patches and repairs brick and concrete structures. Repairs plastered walls and ceilings. Prepares and paints interior and exterior surfaces consisting of metal, wood, and masonry. Performs general plumbing services such as replacing washers and gaskets. Repairs leaks and stoppages in pipes. Repairs roofs, drain boards, rainspouts, and so forth using general sheet metal techniques. Performs general electrical maintenance such as replacing light bulbs, fuses, wall plates, switches, and fixture cords. Replaces broken glass. Performs general maintenance on equipment and vehicles such as changing lubricants and refueling. Cleans tools and equipment. Fires and maintains low pressure boilers. Performs routine operation checks on blowers, motors, and regulators. Reports malfunctions immediately after routine operation checks on any blowers, motors, and regulators. May lead a small maintenance unit. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
Experience
One (1) year of experience in maintenance work involving a variety of tasks.
License
Applicants must possess a current, valid Black Seal Boiler Operator License of the appropriate type (high or low pressure) issued by the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development. Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of standard tools, materials, methods, and practices involved in performing general maintenance and repair work. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in performing general maintenance and repair work. Knowledge of the maintenance involved for a low pressure boiler room operation. Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to exercise safety precautions in the work place. Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, distribute, and use equipment, materials, and supplies. Ability to maintain records. Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
