New Jersey sheriffs are elected county-wide for three-year terms. The office runs the county jail in most counties, provides courthouse security, serves civil process, and conducts sheriff's sales of foreclosed property.

Being elected, the sheriff is not examined. Sheriff's officers under them are classified law enforcement titles with published specifications and competitive examinations.
