Definition

Under direction, operates and maintains stationary steam boilers or steam generators and auxiliary boiler equipment having safety valve or valves set higher than fifteen pounds per square inch gauge and rated over 500 boiler horsepower; may also take a leading part in operation and maintenance of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment; may take the lead over Stationary Firemen; does other related duties.

Examples of work

Operates and maintains stationary engines and mechanical equipment such as steam engines, air compressors, generators, motors, turbines, and steam boilers to provide utilities such as light, heat, or power for buildings and industrial processes. Reads meters and gauges or automatic recording devices at specific intervals to verify operating conditions. Record data such as temperature of equipment, hours of operation, fuel consumed, temperature or pressure, water levels, analysis of flue gases, voltage load, and generator balance. Adjusts manual controls or overrides automatic controls to bring equipment into recommended or prescribed operating ranges, to switch to backup equipment or systems, or to shut down equipment. Visually inspects equipment at periodic intervals to detect malfunctions or need for repair, adjustment, or lubrication. Maintains equipment by tightening fittings, repacking bearings, replacing packing glands, gaskets, valves, recorders, and gages, and cleaning or replacing burners or other components using hand and power tools. May oil and lubricate equipment. May perform water titration tests and pour chemical additives such as water softeners into treatment tank to prevent scale buildup and to clean boiler lines. May record operation and maintenance actions taken during shift in operator's logbook. Receives, stores, safeguards, and records use of equipment, materials, and supplies. Maintains records and files of the power plant. May take a leading part in operation and maintenance of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment. May take the lead over Stationary Firemen. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

License

Applicants will be required to possess an Operating Engineer's license of the appropriate grade and type issued by the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development. Applicants may be required to have successfully completed a one-year training program and possess a certificate of proficiency in heating, ventilation and air conditioning from an accredited community college, vocational or technical school. Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

Knowledge of the varied types of boilers, engines, motors, and auxiliary equipment used in power and heating plants, and their use, care, adjustment, and maintenance. Knowledge of the methods used to operate, maintain, and make minor repairs and adjustments to varied types of feed and vacuum pumps, generators and motors, feed conveyors, blowers, and automatic stokers. Knowledge of the methods used in setting governors. Knowledge of the varied safety devices and measures used, to operate power and heating plants and auxiliary equipment and of the methods used to make periodic comprehensive tests. Knowledge of methods used in recording periodic readings of fuel consumption, pressure, and draft conditions, temperature, steam flow, and other recording apparatus. Ability to provide work assignments and instructions to power and heating plant employees and review their work. Ability to operate, maintain, and make minor and emergency repairs to varied types of boilers, engines, electrical generating equipment, and other types of machinery and equipment used in power and heating plants. Ability to inspect, check, and utilize safety units and devices. Ability to lubricate and clean machinery and equipment, and operate and maintain varied types of feed and vacuum pumps, generators and motors, feed conveyors, blowers, and automatic stokers. Ability to set varied types of governors and to record accurate readings of fuel consumption, pressure, draft conditions, temperature, and steam flow. Ability to obtain, store, and safeguard power equipment, materials, and supplies. Ability to prepare reports of time readings and fuel consumption. Ability to maintain records and files. Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
