Definition

Under direction, in a penal institution, provides instruction on the elementary and/or secondary level in order to further the education of inmates for the purpose of preparing them for a high school equivalency examination; does other related duties.

Examples of work

  • Plans subject matter to be taught.
  • Devises courses of study in accordance with individual abilities.
  • Prepares study program in accordance with a standard high school of elementary curriculum.
  • Prepares periodic examinations or programs designed to measure inmates scholastic knowledge and reading ability.
  • Gives remedial reading and/or other instruction to participants to determine their scholastic standing and assigns them to appropriate classes.
  • Stimulates participation interest in the study program.
  • Provides counsel and advice to inmates on problems related to education and vocational goals.
  • Keeps records and files.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

License

Possession of a teacher's certificate or eligibility for certification as a teacher in the State of New Jersey.

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in NJ only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of an elementary and/or secondary education.
  • Knowledge of the techniques used in group activities.
  • Knowledge of the preparation and maintenance of records.
  • Ability to analyze, comprehend and interpret problems pertinent to the work involved.
  • Ability to organize assigned work and develop effective work methods.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with associates.
  • Ability to observe and report conditions of inmates.
  • Ability to work with a variety of types of people.
  • Ability to establish and maintain records and files.
  • Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
