TEACHER JUVENILE FACILITIES

Definition

Under direction in a transitional institutional setting, is responsible for providing remedial instruction on the elementary and/or secondary level to further the education and social adjustment of emotionally disturbed, neurologically or perceptually impaired, and/or socially maladjusted atypical individuals or abandoned, abused, or neglected children; does related work as required.

Examples of work

• Plans subject matter to be taught.
• Devises courses of study in accord with individuals abilities.
• Prepares periodic examinations or programs designed to measure resident's scholastic knowledge and reading ability.
• Gives remedial reading and/or other instruction to individual residents.
• Interviews new residents to determine their scholastic standing.
• Stimulates interest in the study program.
• Confers with school authorities, psychologists, psychiatrists, and other interested persons on the resident's progress.
• Provides counsel to individuals and groups on problems related to social behavior and personal relationships.
• Prepares accurate and informative reports.
• Keeps essential records and files.
• Assesses individuals for high school equivalency.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

License

Possession of a valid New Jersey regular Teacher's Certificate and 15 semester hour credits in any one or in any combination of the following subject areas; compensatory education, affective education, urban education, special education, group dynamics, guidance or counseling.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Knowledge of principles and techniques of elementary and/or secondary education.
• Knowledge of problems involved in the care, custody, and treatment of youngsters.
• Knowledge of techniques used in group activities and individual counseling.
• Knowledge of role pl\Adge of role playing, sociodrama, simulation games, and student centered teaching.
• Ability to test for and teach basic skills such as reading and math and plan appropriate lessons for children.
• Ability to make up own tests.
• Ability to create lesson plans in all subjects.
• Ability to communicate with and relate to children with social and behavioral problems.
• Ability to discern children's needs and interest.
• Ability to recognize learning problems.
• Ability to do counseling.
• Ability to various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
• Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
