Assistant Sludge Plant Operator and Repairer is a local service title. Examples of work

  • Assists in operating and regulating alum and lime feeders, chemical feed machines, chlorinators, purification machines, water pumps, meters, indicators, filters, flow meters, deep well water pumps and other mechanical equipment of the sludge plant in order to remove soot and dirt from river water,
  • Assists in maintaining and performing minor and emergency repairs on the mechanical equipment of the sludge plant.
  • Assists in performing routine bacteriological and chemical analyses of water to determine purity and portability, PH, turbidity and other periodic qualitative and quantitative tests as may be necessary to satisfy federal, state and local health laws and standards.
  • Takes periodic readings of meters, gauges, flowmeters and other recording apparatus.
  • Assists in replacing water valves and other sludge plant parts and equipment.
  • Assists in yarning, pouring and caulking joints, assists in oiling and greasing sludge plant equipment.
  • Obtains safeguards and properly uses needed equipment, tools, materials and supplies.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of the methods used in operating, adjusting, regulating, maintaining and making minor and emergency repairs and adjustments to alum and lime feeders.
  • Knowledge of chemical feed machines and chlorinators.
  • Knowledge of purification machines, water pumps, meter indicators, filters, flowmeters and other mechanical equipment included in the sludge plant.
  • Knowledge of the problems involved in taking accurate readings of flowmeters, pressure gauges, meter indicators and other recording devices.
  • Knowledge of the proper procedures used in testing routine repairs to water mains, pipes and appurtenances.
  • Knowledge of the varied types of tools used in the Maintenance and repair of water installations and of the proper use of such tools.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with associates and other groups and individuals engaged in or concerned with the work related to the sludge plant.
  • Ability to assist in operating, adjusting, regulating, maintaining and making minor and emergency repairs and adjustments to alum and lime feeders and chemical feed machines and chlorinators, purification machines, water pumps, meter indicators, filters, flowmeters and other mechanical equipment included in the keep well pumps and sludge plant.
  • Ability to take accurate readings of flow-meters, pressure gauges, meter indicators and other recording devices.
  • Ability to obtain, store and safeguard needed equipment, materials and supplies, ability to understand, remember and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Ability to work for long periods in emergency situations and to remain on the job until all repairs has been made.
  • Ability to use varied tools and equipment.
  • Ability to maintain needed records and files. Ability to learn quickly from oral and written explanations and demonstrations.
  • Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
