Definition

Under direction, performs various field and office work involved in assisting sexual assault victims and their families; provides counseling services; educates the community on rape prevention; does related duties.

Examples of work

• Meets sexual assault victims on entry to hospital and provides psychological support to crisis reaction.
• Provides counseling and other crisis intervention services to victims and their families.
• May accompany the victim to the police station, grandjury, or court to provide moral and psychological support; assists victim to provide necessary statements.
• Visits victims and their families; provides information on varied community resources and other referral services that may be of assistance to the victim.
• Prepares information literature and brochures relevant to the purpose and existence of the program.
• Establishes and prepares case histories on each case.
• May prepare regular and special reports of program activities.
• May provide information utilized to prepare grant proposals for federal and state funding.
• Educates the public at conferences, workshops, and other activities relevant to sexual assault, including date rape, prevention and self defense, and mechanisms used to cope with rape.
• Establishes liaison with legal, medical, education, and mental health personnel to maintain a variety of other community resources and referral services for clients.
• Keeps abreast of current literature, developments, and trends of thought in the field of counseling and crisis intervention.
• Prepares correspondence in the course of official duties.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Education

Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor's degree in Sociology,Psychology, Social Work, Social Welfare, or other related field.

Experience

One (1) year of experience in social work, guidance, or counseling with emphasis on crisis intervention.

License

Appointee will be required to possess a drive's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Knowledge of the problems encountered in collecting and analyzing the information necessary to compile and evaluate social case histories.
• Knowledge of problems encountered in dealing with victims of sexual assault, and of the work involved in dealing with the health, welfare, and social adjustment of these victims.
• Knowledge of the principles and techniques utilized in individual counseling.
• Knowledge of the psychological and social effects of sexual assault.
• Ability to read and interpret information on the laws, rules, and regulations relevant to sexual assault and to apply them to specific situations.
• Ability to utilize and apply social casework methods and terminology after a period of training.
• Ability to identify and coordinate the use of varied community resources to facilitate the treatment and adjustment of assault victims.
• Ability to read and interpret information on assault prevention and treatment methods and to apply it to specific situations.
• Ability to speak and participate in conferences and workshops and to present information utilized for public awareness and education.
• Ability to prepare correspondence and other regular and special reports, and to assist in providing information used to prepare such reports.
• Ability to establish liaison with legal, medical, and education and mental health personnel whose functions impact upon those of the unit.
• Ability to collect, evaluate, and apprise significant factual information provided by assault victims and their families.
• Ability to organize assigned counseling tasks and develop effective work methods.
• Ability to work harmoniously with associates, assault victims, and their families. Ability to effectively handle crisis situations and provide counseling and other intervention services to assault victims and their families.
• Ability to plan and execute social readjustment programs.
• Ability to establish and maintain essential case histories, records, and files.
• Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
• Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
