Definition

Under direction, supervises and coordinates the activities of staff engaged in computer operations; does related work as required

Examples of work

Schedules work and assigns personnel. Trains personnel to operate computers and peripheral and auxiliary equipment. Confers with programming personnel to test new and revised programs. Develops operating methods to process data; makes minor changes in standardized programs to modify output content or format. Coordinates the allocation of peripheral devices; monitors reconfigurations. Locates and corrects error conditions. Notifies programming personnel when necessary to locate and correct cause of error or failure. Revises operating schedules. Monitors production, operating and down time. Recommends program changes. Arranges for preventive maintenance of equipment. Coordinates work flow between shifts. Identifies and reports problems than impact production schedules. Plans, organizes, and assigns work of the organizational unit and evaluates employee performance and conduct, enabling the effective recommendation of the hiring, firing, promoting, and disciplining of employees. Cooperates with vendor maintenance personnel and other specialists to diagnose and correct hardware and software problems. Supervises the monitoring of system consoles for transient hardware or software errors. Provides assignments and instructions to staff and supervises their work performance. Prepares reports. Maintains records and files. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

Three (3) years of experience in the operation of a mainframe/departmental sized computer console in a computer room. (Experience in the operation of a personal computer or LAN system will not be accepted).

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

Knowledge of computer equipment capabilities and functions Knowledge of the operator commands and responses required to communicate with the operating system. Knowledge of system operating configurations and equipment characteristics, job control language and standard utility programs. Knowledge of computer operations and related peripheral equipment. Ability to identify and resolve a wide range of common equipment and operating problems. Ability to test internal system operating accuracy. Ability to isolate, identify, and explain computer hardware problems. Ability to utilize accepted data processing procedures, methods and techniques. Ability to prepare reports. Ability to operate the control console of a computer system. Ability to test new and revised programs and modify existing programs. Ability to coordinate the allocation and reconfiguration of peripheral devices. Ability to monitor production, operating and down time, and revise operating schedules. Ability to provide assignments and instruction to staff and supervise their work performance. Ability to maintain records and files. Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
