Definition

Under direction, plans, organizes, and directs the use of county radiological personnel and equipment; assists municipalities within the county in establishing radiological monitoring stations and equipping them with trained personnel; assembles and disseminates information on radiological hazards and radiation protection; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

  • Providers assistance to Municipal Emergency Management Directors in recruiting, selecting, and training needed personnel and in organizing local radiological facilities.
  • Conducts training programs on various aspects of radiological, biological, and chemical warfare.
  • Plans and develops training courses and materials.
  • Trains law enforcement and public safety officials in the detection, neutralization, and elimination of radiation hazards and in the use and care of radiological instruments.
  • Plans and develops an education program designed to acquaint the general public with radiation hazards and safety precautions to be exercised.
  • Plans, supervises, and analyzes radiological training exercises.
  • Supervises the use and monitoring of radioactive material in simulated exercises of radiological incidents.
  • Supervises the use, maintenance, and repair of radiological equipment throughout the county.
  • Prepares and maintains records and reports on the use, nature, and quantity of radioactive material in existence throughout the county.
  • Advises the County Emergency Management Coordinator on radiological matters.
  • Plans and coordinates activities and programs of radiological defense (RADEF) units within the county.
  • Supervises decontamination activities in cases of radiological incidents.
  • Coordinates activities of all county and municipal radiological defense personnel at the County Control Center under operational or simulated exercises.
  • Receives, analyzes, and evaluates radiological data and attempts to predict radiological conditions throughout the county at the Control Center.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Education

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in any of the physical sciences.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of the science of radiation physics.
  • Knowledge of the hazards inherent in radioactive materials and the methods of controlling these hazards.
  • Knowledge of the causes and effects of radioactive fallout.
  • Knowledge of the uses of radioactive materials.
  • Knowledge of the methods of disposing of radioactive waste products.
  • Knowledge of theory, principles, and techniques of radiation decontamination.
  • Knowledge of the use, care, and maintenance of radiological instruments.
  • Ability to organize assigned work and develop work methods, plans, and programs.
  • Ability to analyze radiological problems.
  • Ability to give training, instruction, assignments, and supervision to assigned personnel.
  • Ability to provide advice and assistance to municipal officials in the preparation, maintenance, and development of radiological defense programs.
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise, accurate reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
  • Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
