• Performs inspection of the cervix and thorough internal examinations including pap smears, obtaining cytological specimens for cervical cancer screening, and including rectal, colon, and breast examination.
• Performs and teaches methods of self breast examination.
• Gathers specimens for pap smears and gonococcus cultures.
• Performs abdominal examinations and examines extremities for edema, lesions, varicosities, and phlebitis.
• Counsels patients as to findings, and refers patient to licensed physician for necessary follow up and treatment.
• Performs, orders, and interprets routine laboratory tests.
• Develops a health maintenance plan for patient including health education, disease prevention, and general anticipatory guidance.
• Provides periodic health supervision of normal, nonpregnant, and asymptomatic women for health maintenance.
• Provides clinical management within medical protocols of women having uncomplicated gynecologic illness.
• Provides ambulatory prenatal care with women who have had an uncomplicated pregnancy with attention to the maternal/infant relationship while not assuming primary care of the infant.
• Provides health education and counseling including psychosocial dimensions in the areas of nutrition, sexuality, child bearing, parenting, and family life.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

License

Applicants must possess a current and valid certification as an Advanced Practice Nurse , Obstetrics and Gynecology, issued by the New Jersey Board of Nursing.

Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Knowledge of the physiology of pregnancy.
• Knowledge of the normal gynecologic care of women during the life cycle including health supervision, health maintenance, and education.
• Knowledge of etiology and recognition and treatment of gynecologic problems and deviations.
• Knowledge of normal physical and psychosexual development and changes.
• Knowledge of appropriate management and interpretation of diagnostic studies and tests relevant to obstetrics-gynecologic practice.
• Knowledge of the physiology of pregnancy and of providing prenatal care in low risk pregnancy.
• Knowledge of the evaluation of fetal health status, etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of problems of pregnancy.
• Knowledge of developmental tasks of pregnancy, labor and delivery, and puerperium.
• Knowledge of the preparation and maintenance of accurate medical and other records.
• Knowledge of procedures used in performing various physical examination such as internal pelvic, rectal, abdominal, and colon.
