Definition
Under direction, writes work orders related to the repair and maintenance of motor vehicles and makes arrangements for the servicing and/or repair of such vehicles; does related work as required.
Examples of work
Determines the need and extent of repairs and service to motor vehicles by road test, use of mechanical or electronic diagnostic testing devices, visual inspection of vehicles, or by questioning driver about vehicle's performance. Estimates the extent of repairs and service and prepares itemized work order listing general description of problem and/or service needed, parts needed, and amount of labor time involved in making the repairs or service. Advises operator of vehicle of what repairs or services are needed and the length of time it will take to complete such work. May estimate the cost involved in making repair and/or performing service to vehicle. May be responsible for the leasing or assignment of vehicles to individuals. In accord with a preventive maintenance schedule, arranges for the servicing of vehicles. Expedites the procurement of automotive parts. In conjunction with using agencies, determines the priority to be given to vehicles in the shop for servicing or repair. Schedules vehicles for lubrication or repairs based on date of last lubrication and mileage traveled or urgency of repairs. Distributes or redistributes work order to mechanics based on information gathered as to backlog and priority of the mechanical repairs needed. Reviews repair work orders and determines priority of repair and what garage and shift is to do the work. Determines whether repair should be made on site or at a garage. Maintains schedules for body work, preventive maintenance, regular maintenance, and warranty work. Secures estimates for body work to be done from vendors and chooses body shop according to estimated cost and quality of work. Ensures that there is a mechanic available for emergency repair situations. Road tests vehicles and equipment to ensure that repair work is completed properly before vehicle or equipment is returned to assignee or operator. In accord with established policy, obtains estimates for purchases requiring bidding procedures. Maintains essential records and files. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
One (1) year of experience in either expediting mechanical repairs and maintenance services to motor vehicles and/or in inspecting and testing motor vehicles to determine the need for and cost of repairs and/or in the repair and maintenance of various types of automotive equipment.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position. Appointees may be required to possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of where and how a variety of automotive systems, accessories, and parts of systems such as wheel cylinders, fuel lines, condensers, and mufflers are installed. Knowledge of varied types of motors and equipment and their operation. Knowledge of the procedures for diagnosing the reasons for motor failure and of the steps necessary to correct the condition. Knowledge of the makeup, operation, and installation procedures for all components and systems of vehicles such as engines, transmissions, front and rear-end assemblies, electrical, and hydraulic systems. Ability to organize preventive maintenance and mechanical repair work based on information gathered as to priority and need. Ability to establish and maintain accurate records and files. Ability to work harmoniously with employees. Ability to expedite mechanical repair work. Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording information systems used by the agency, office or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
