Definition
Under direction, assists a trades supervisor in the supervision of employees working as journeymen in several trades involved in the repair and maintenance of buildings; does other related duties as required.
Examples of work
- May assist in developing an effective repair and maintenance work program.
- Lays out and supervises projects, and prepares sketches and diagrams of work to be done.
- Estimates costs of repair to structures or equipment.
- Trains and instructs new employees.
- Inspects completed work.
- Performs special assignments.
- Repairs and maintains shop tools.
- Maintains records of job materials, inspection reports, and prepares other reports as required.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Experience
Three (3) years of journeyman trades experience in work involving the maintenance, repair, and construction of large buildings.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge of problems and work involved in maintenance, repair, and construction work.
- Knowledge of standard tools, materials, methods, practices, occupational hazards, and safety precautions.
- Knowledge of the preparation of specifications for materials and equipment.
- Knowledge of methods used to schedule work in a large facility. Ability to organize assigned work.
- Ability to give assignments and instructions to groups and individuals.
- Ability to prepare reports.
- Ability to prepare records and files.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
