Definition

Under direction operates a variety of equipment to produce compost material; does other related duties as required.

Under close supervision, performs standardized basic tests and analyses to determine the amount or concentration of various substances found in water samples collected from potable water, wastewater, or other sources; does other related duties as required.

Examples of work

• Operates a variety of equipment/machinery such as a front end loader, dump truck, and street sweeper to load, transport, mix, and arrange compost material and then clean work area.
• Mixes and arranges compost material.
• Operates various compost and/or wood chip screening machines to separate compost material from wood chips.
• Uses a variety of hand/power tools to clean the area, maintain equipment, and arrange and set up aeration system, and other related tasks.
• Arranges sludge and wood chips mixture in a predetermined format to provide for the composting process.
• Ensures that proper external conditions exist for composting such as temperature and aeration.
• Performs minor repair and maintenance to equipment, tools, and vehicles.
• Cleans tools, equipment, and work area.
• Prepares reports on activities performed.
• Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
• Performs basic chemical, physical, and bacteriological tests, and analysis on water samples from various sources.
• Arranges apparatus, instruments, and equipment.
• Adheres to safety practices, guidelines, and procedures in the laboratory.
• Reads test results and reports or explains elementary relationships which exist between various test values.
• Conducts simple qualitative tests of water for color, alkalinity/acidity, hardness, turbidity, and chlorine residual.
• Arranges laboratory equipment and prepares specimens for testing or microscopic examination.
• Prepares solutions and indicators by weighing, measuring, and mixing solid and liquid reagents; may heat and boil solutions.
• Prepares culture media from fresh and dehydrated materials by measuring, mixing, heating, and filtering.
• Maintains stock of media.
• Performs routine instrument and equipment repair and maintenance.
• Performs bacteriological examinations limited to standard and simple techniques not requiring specialized knowledge of the fields of bacteriology.
• Operates spectrophotometer for the analysis of parameters such as iron, nitrate, phosphorus, copper, and manganese.
• Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Experience

One (1) year of experience in operating and maintaining one or more types of equipment such as front end loaders, roller, backhoe, and so forth used in composting activities.

One (1) year of experience conducting standardized basic samples chemical and/or bacteriological testing and analysis on water samples.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

• DEFINITION
• Under direction operates, adjusts, and regulates sewage plant pumps, valves, and other equipment, takes periodic readings of relevant gauges, and may conduct routine standardized tests on sewage samples; does related work as required.

• EXAMPLES OF WORK:
• Operates, adjusts, and regulates chemical feed machines, sludge digestion pumps, flow meters, valves, and other equipment.
• Checks and adjusts the flow and levels in varied tanks and sludge chambers.
• Takes periodic readings of relevant gauges and records these readings.
• Opens and closes appropriate valves.
• Maintains proper liquid levels in pressure accumulators.
• Reads and checks gas meters and regulates gas cocks. Operates, adjusts, and regulates chlorinators.

• REQUIREMENTS:
• EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of experience in operating, adjusting, regulating, repairing, and maintaining pumps, valves, electric motors, and other electrical and mechanical equipment of the type used in a sewage treatment plant.
• LICENSE:
• Appointees may be required to possess a current and valid Public Wastewater Systems Operator License and/or a Public Water Treatment System Operator License of the appropriate class issued by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
