Definition

Under direction, assists with the routine and the less difficult tasks involved in the installation, construction, and repair of electric lines and related equipment; does related work as required.

Examples of work

  • Slices cables, assembles needed materials, and supplies line worker with tools and equipment.
  • Places barricades around open manholes and excavations and below crew members working overhead to protect them and the public from injury.
  • Loads and unloads equipment and supplies from truck.
  • Pulls wires and cables through ducts.
  • Cleans area after work is completed.
  • Aids in the erection of utility poles and the installation and repair of overhead power lines by digging holes, attaching cross arms to poles, and steadying poles being raised into an upright position.
  • Trims and removes trees for line clearance.
  • Operates equipment such as auger, broom, and winch.
  • Drives truck to transport material and equipment to and from work locations.
  • Obtains, stores, and safeguards materials.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform in essential duties of the position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of standard tools, materials, methods, practices, occupational hazards, and safety precautions involved in electrical and general maintenance work. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Ability to take needed safety precautions in performing the work.
  • Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, distribute, and properly use needed equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
