Definition

Under direction, performs the more difficult work involved in the maintenance and repair of sewers and sewer equipment, and in clearing stoppages in main line and home sewer connections and/or takes the lead in a unit; does other related duties as required.

Under direction, performs the more difficult and responsible work involved in the installation, maintenance, and repair of water mains, valves, pumps, hydrants, pipes, and other water service equipment and/or performs routine, repetitive, and noncomplex field and office work involved in recording and disseminating data concerning the water distribution system; does other related duties.

Under direction, takes the lead over other operators and operates, adjusts, and regulates water treatment plant pumps, valves, and other equipment, maintains these as needed, takes periodic readings of relevant gauges, and may conduct routine standardized tests on water samples; does other related duties.

Examples of work

• Performs the more difficult tasks and/or takes the lead in a unit in tasks involved in cleaning storm water and sewer catch basins.
• Repairs broken sewer lines.
• Replaces worn parts.
• Installs new sewer pipe.
• May take the lead in a sewer maintenance unit and/or perform the more difficult work involving the clearing of stoppages.
• Enters homes and locates sewer drains.

• Sets drilling machines and taps water mains to the size required by placing needed sleeves and properly setting valves.
• Disassembles fire hydrants, removes defective parts, installs new parts, and reassembles hydrants.
• Replaces water valves.
• Operates an air compressor and pneumatic drill or other equipment.
• Digs trenches to remove defective pipes and to install new pipes and mains.
• Yarns, pours, and caulks joints.
• Loads and unloads pipes and fittings.

• May measure in the field the locations of valves and other water system appurtenances, and plots and inks additions and corrections to water distribution system maps.
• May determine the presence and location of leaks, using a mechanical or electronic device.
• May perform routine drafting and tracing work relating to the distribution system such as plotting detailed sheets showing size and location of valves and hydrants to be installed.
• May prepare sketches of areas subject to street openings for repair work by public and private agencies indicative of the location of water fixtures.
• May act as liaison with contractors during installation of water main extensions by verifying exact location of installation and advising on needed materials such as length of pipe and type of valves and fittings.
• May coordinate in the field, water system shutdowns between maintenance crews and private contractors, and determines what valves must be closed so as to cause minimum disturbance to water users.
• May determine, exercising independent judgment, whether valve can be closed and reopened without breaking and what fire hydrants should be opened to most efficiently flush the system.
• May perform mathematical computations to determine volume of water flow involving a mathematical formula based on pipe diameter and water velocity.
• May organize effective work methods in order to locate leaks or blockages in the water distribution system.
• May use appropriate devices in order to locate underground leaks.
• May inspect the plumbing in buildings in order to locate leaks due to faulty plumbing.
• May test fire hydrants with appropriate devices in order to locate leaks.
• May trace water leakage into buildings in order to determine source.
• May calibrate the inside of water main in order to determine the exact inside diameter.
• May use a Pito Rod, Pito Recorder and U Tube in order to calculate the quantity of flow in the main.
• May use a portable standard tester or the Pito Rod and U tube in order to test meters of two inches and larger sizes.
• May set up, test and adjust recording pressure gauges.
• May use proper equipment in order to locate underground water mains, various water services, curb stops, maingates, and manhole covers.
• May perform more difficult work involved in making external and internal examinations of water valves and fire hydrants.
• May remove defective parts, install new parts, and reassemble valves and hydrants.

• May maintain hydrants by properly packing each unit with the proper types of grease and oil.

• Plans work schedules, allocating tasks to workers based upon work priority and individual worker expertise.
• Inspects equipment, such as filters, chlorine indicators, basins, filtered water basins, and pumps, to detect malfunctions.
• Takes periodic readings of relevant gauges and records these readings.
• Opens and closes appropriate valves.
• Dumps specified amounts of chemicals, such as chlorine, ammonia, and lime into water or adjusts automatic devices that admit specified amounts of chemicals into water to disinfect, deodorize, and clarify it.
• Starts agitators to mix chemicals or allows impurities to settle out of water as appropriate.
• Operates pumping equipment to transfer raw water to treatment plant or purified water into water mains.
• Monitors panelboard, adjusting controls to regulate flow rates, loss of head pressure and water elevation, and distribution of water.

Experience

Two (2) years of experience in sewer installation or repair work and/or in varied plumbing work and/or in the operation and maintenance of sewer maintenance equipment.

Two (2) years of experience in the installation, repair, and maintenance of water mains, pipes, valves, hydrants, and other water service equipment and/or in the operation of water treatment plant apparatus and/or in varied plumbing work.

Two (2) years of experience in operating, adjusting, regulating, repairing, and maintaining pumps, valves, electric motors, and other electrical and mechanical equipment of the type used in a water treatment plant, pumping station, or filtration plant.

License

Appointees may be required to possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated.
